They Can Take Our QB, But They'll Never Take Our Jerky... E-mail

Ben's judgment may be questionable, but PLB's is not.

The maker of Big Ben's Beef Jerky says the product ain't going nowhere for the time being.

Big Ben's beef stick, on the other hand...

Terrible joke, I know.

But would you expect any less?

(h/t Big Bob for the tip!)

Check it out, the Steelers have apparently re-signed both Ryan Clark and ANTWAAN RANDLE EL!

How do you like that news to cap off your first Monday of free agency?

El yeah!

Will Allen.

Here's what I know about him - free agent Safety from the Bucs who at one time played under Tomlin while he was in Tampa, and according to Adam Schefter, is soon to become the newest Steeler.

Apparently, he was a pro bowl alternate as a special teamer after the 2008 season, but hasn't started a game at Safety since 2007, and only played in like five games last season (starting in two of them) before being placed on IR.

Here's what Buccaneers.com's got for you on Allen's career stats...

And here's what Football Outsiders can add...

So, there you go.

Not exactly Antrel Rolle, but then, the Steelers really aren't going to throw almost $40 million at anyone in free agency, so what would we expect?

Feel free to acquaint yourself with he who could become Troy's new partner in crime (or perhaps just a Special Teamer, who even really knows).

And feel free to deposit any personal thoughts or opinions on this move in the comments.

PS - As of about 3 PM, Schefter's calling both Allen AND...
schefterbattle

UPDATE (3:15 PM): SteelCityInsider confirms - the Steelers have agreed to terms with both Allen and Battle - both multi-year deals.

So much for not rushing into free agency, I guess...

I Fail To See How This Has Anything To Do With The Giants... E-mail

Ok, first of all, there's no Eli vs. Big Ben debate, Gary.

Despite the fact that the two were part of the same draft class, Big Ben is still more often compared to Peyton Manning (and Tom Brady) than he is to Eli Manning.

Besides, ok, you're right, Ben's mental handicap justifies the Giants taking Eli.

Well then, where was that prescient foresight when they signed Plaxico Burress?

Funny, I didn't know this was a chance for the NY media to feel good about the Giants.

I thought the story was about Pittsburgh Steelers QB, Ben Roethlisberger.

Honestly, even the biggest Roethlisberger apologists (like me) acknowledge that his off-field decision-making skills have not developed nearly as quickly as his on-field decision-making skills (and even those aren't totally developed).

But really?

This isn't even a logical argument (unless of course the Giants picked [read: traded Phillip Rivers for] Eli over Ben because they somehow knew Ben was "trouble").

Sorry, Gary.

Ish don't sink so.
Ish don't think so sound bite

I've never had more emails in my inbox from TMZ.com than I do right now.

Ben, seriously, dude?

Criminal investigation pending, Ben has yet to be formally charged...yadda yadda...Rapistberger.

I love how the woman identified him as 6'5" and 241 pounds just off the top of her head.

That's 241 pounds, not 240 or 242.

What, did she study his measurements before she accused him of touching her where she pees (in all fairness, no idea what the alleged sexual assault is in this case)?

Either way, Ben - What are you even doing hanging out in college bars at 28, man?

With WILLIE COLON?!?!

A Pirate's Life For Willie Parker? E-mail

Well, we're not even 24 hours into free agency and apparently the Bucaneers may already be interested in signing he who is #2 behind Frenchy Fuqua for most rushing yards in a game by a Steeler - Fast Willie Parker.

Personally, I think the Bucs still owe the Steelers a little something, here.

We certainly don't know if Willie will end up in Tampa, but considering we let them have Lord Byron last offseason (in some sense), we just might be handing them Willie Parker this offseason, and they're the ones responsible for Sean Mahan, I think it's only fair that we get a little sugar in return.

Of course, I suppose you could say Tampa has given us enough.

After all, there have been few sweeter moments over the past few years than watching the Steelers bring home Lombardi #6.

Still, Sean Mahan.

I guess we'll just have to repay them for that mess this upcoming season, then, won't we?

Happy Friday, kids.

So, When Do We Get Our Tender? E-mail

Call the doctor, 'cause the Steelers have got a tender Colon!

/rimshot sound effect

Oh wait, that's the Steelers have tendered Colon.

My mistake.

That little disgraceful stab at the obvious joke aside, the Steelers have in fact offered RT Willie Colon the 2nd highest tender at their disposal, which comes with a $2.5 million, one-year contract.

Meaning that if another team wanted to sign him after free agency begins tonight at midnight, they'd have to put up a 2010 1st round draft pick in order to do so, and even if they do, the Steelers can match any offer another team makes and keep Colon all to themselves.

I've heard from a number of sources (including his agent) that Colon is one of the more underrated offensive linemen in the league (despite the negative popular sentiment). And obviously the Steelers agree, or they wouldn't have made him a 1st round tender.

Now, I'm not sure if anyone has taken into account his penchant for false start penalties, but the implication is that despite what we may think, he just might be an awfully attractive guy to some other teams around the league. Enough so that his agent seems to think another team might be willing to try and snatch him away from the Steelers - or perhaps that's more like wishful thinking.

I don't really care about any of that, though, so I'm just going to keep this train moving, baby...

Either way, Colon isn't the only restricted free agent the Steelers tendered over the past two days.

Along with Colon, the team offered Dan Sepulveda, Willie Gay and Matt Spaeth the lowest allowable tenders, meaning that if another team tries to sign them, the Steelers have a right to match that team's offer, and if they don't, Spaeth would get them a 2010 3rd round pick, Sepulveda would get them a 2010 4th round pick, and Gay would get them a 2010 7th round pick.

Personally, if any other team wanted to sign Willie Gay, I would make it required that they watch this as well...

But that's just me.

Anyways...

Finally, because they're still not sure why Carey Davis or Darnell Stapleton are on the team, those two have not been tendered.

And thus ends today's coverage of yesterday's news.

This blog used to not suck so much...wtf happened, man?

**SIGH**

"This is about more than charges. This is about [Jeff's] reputation. No one wants to be labeled a drunk or obnoxious."

- Robert Del Greco (Jeff Reed's attorney)

Ok, let's be serious here, Robert.

If Jeff Reed was really that worried about being labeled a drunk or obnoxious, he probably wouldn't have gotten shit-housed and fought a paper towel dispenser last February, would he have?

This is like Chad Johnson's lawyer saying no one wants to be labeled an attention whore.

That shipped has sailed, my friend.

That being said...

Last week, the Steelers slapped Jeff Reed with the franchise tag.

This week, a Pittsburgh district judge slapped him (don't you wish the sentence just ended there) with 40 hours of community service.

The good news for Jeff, though, is that the judge also dropped the two more serious charges against him, and -  assuming he can keep a lid on his douchebaggery for the next six weeks or so - will probably dismiss the two remaining charges as well.

The even better news is that he didn't get tasered during that little altercation with police that led to the charges in the first place (one of the arresting officers said he would've tasered Reed if he had his taser out at the time).

So all in all, between the $2.8 million he'll be funnelling into the South Side's economy in 2010 and not having thousands of volts of electricity pumped through his person, I'd say it's been a pretty solid week for Jeff Reed.

And that my friends, is installment one of your day late Steelers news.

Come back later for more on what happened yesterday...I'm all over it.

Oh, and PS - no word yet on whether ref'ing jello wrestling at Buckhead's on Tuesday nights counts as community service.
